Reading the thread on clutch vs no clutch got me to thinking. How many of you old fogies like me learned to drive on a 4X3, 4X4, 5X4, 6X4 and other 2 stick trucks? the first truck I drove, I was 14 hauling hay out of the fields and stuffing it in the barn. It was an early 60s Pete cabover with a cummins and a 4X4, all off road. It hooked me, and I knew I was going to drive trucks as soon as I could.

I got my CDL at 21 and there were still a lot of 2 stick trucks on the road then, and to get hired you pretty much had to know how to drive one. I drove a few 13's and 10's in the meantime as well and then in the 80s the twins started to disappear.

My favorite truck of all time with a 2 stick was the last of the A model KWs, extended hood and a V8 Cat with a 6X4 in the early 80s, what a hot rod that thing was.

I know, I'm old, but just curious how many drivers out there today that were lucky like me and got to learn how to drive this way. You really had to think about what you were doing then.

Back then, trucking was fun... Today, not so much, I retired 2 years ago and want to say thanks to you men and women who are hanging in there, just for the love of the job. Let's hope it gets better soon!

The driver in 80s were having a very decent taste about trucks. More manual and more powerful. Even though those truck require a lot of skill they were the beloved ones.

The new era trucks are much more lighter and almost everything is electronic now. The old drivers has to adapt a lot to make those truck dancing.

The most wallet-friendly truck is the Ford Ranger; this truck is a bit smaller than the rest. One drawback however is that the ride isn't as smooth as compared with the F-150.
