When you take to the open road, you need to be prepared for anything. We usually don't give a second thought to what will happen if an emergency presents itself. If you are preparing for a long distance road trip, it's wise to take a few things along in case something unexpected happens. Knowing where truck service and repair shops are located along your route is a plus. In addition to a cell phone, first aid kit, flash light and money, there are a few other things you may want to consider adding to the list.
Tool Kit
A basic tool kit with screwdrivers, various wrenches, a hammer and jumper cable can come in handy if something breaks on the vehicle.
GPS
An up-to-date GPS will keep you from getting lost if you have to make an emergency detour. Updated systems provide you with the most efficient maps to get you where you are going.
Gallon of Anti-Freeze
One of the biggest problems with vehicles on the road is a malfunction with the radiator or cooling system. A gallon of anti-freeze may be just what you need to get to the next truck service and repair shop.
Clothes, Blankets and a Pillow
If your vehicle breaks down or you are involved in an accident, you may be forced to stay away longer than intended. Bringing extra clothes, blankets and pillows will help keep you comfortable until you are able to travel again.
Bottles of Water and Food
For long trips, it's wise to take one or two gallons of water and non-perishable food items. This can be a life saver, especially if you are away from highly populated areas and have to wait several hours for assistance.

Comment
It does require a bit of planning, so if you do have a journey to make, it is best to take the time to make a few arrangements rather than just setting off and hoping for the best. You also need to prepare the car, check your oil, tyre treads and pressures to ensure that everything is in right condition.
