Hey Bob I've been doing alotta research into this as I want to run cars when I get back from Afghanistan. Alot depends on what state you register in and for what weight. I.E. since I'm running a dually and 3 car wedge, I'm gonna plate at 35, so that's gonna run about $800. Then DOT is another $300, my CA # is free, but the two initial inspections are gonna run about $350 with the CHP. Then since I don't wanna mess up my IRP and IFTA, that's another $300, BOC-3 is about $50, another $1-200 for a drug testing consortium, and then whatever it costs to register your business name and then you gotta get registered with the IRS as either a sole owner, Corp, or LLC. It's a friggin hassle for the first timer like me and I'm still learning! Good luck brother!

Some of the fees are: $300-Authority, $50 BOC-3 filing, US DOT number $125 (Our Fee), UCR (United Carrier Reg) $80-1 truck per year. If your in California then there are additional fees. Its not at all that expensive as people may think. It just depends what your going to be hauling, and where your going to be hauling.. Most folks don't know that, if your not going to be operating outside of your registered state. Your not required to even have a D.O.T Number.
Starting out!!! The best thing to do is lease on with a company.

Once you get that out of the way and if you are then in business, costs to operate are going to be one of your biggest priorities and fuel costs are going to eat you up. One of our Owner Operators who I talked to on the phone about a month ago told me that she and her husband are getting back $500 a month now clear ( just on one of their units) in everything they have been paying for fuel Far less injector problems and EGR problems too. 60%less carbon footprint so it keeps big brother off their back also. Will stabilize Urea and biofuels from freezing up.
