Driver Training Standards

What kinds of things does the industry need to teach the new generation entering the industry? I own a driving school in Northern BC, and am curious as to where the industry is going and how to teach it.

safety!!safety!!!safety!!!  that sometimes slower is faster. speeding up and keeping with traffic does not only hurt ur fuel economy, but also raises the stress level. sitting back and enjoying the view. that no matter how stupid a question may seem to the individual, the only stupid question out here is the 1 not asked. trucking is a lifestyle not a job. yes it pays the bills,but the individual will never make it out here if they are not able to adapt to the lifestyle. it brings to mind the old cher bono song gypsy,tramps, an theives. the general public views a truck driver as one of the three. a student will normally only look at how much money the can make in a short period of time, an never think about the 4-5 days without a shower or a hot sit down meal. hope this helps

Thanks Dawn! That's certainly a key component we try to instill in everyone, slower definitely is faster! I'm way up north in BC, we have serious conditions to train in, but we don't see the technology side of things as fast as our southern friends! Any upcoming technology we should be aware of?

also i dont know if u have heard of first observer.com this took the place of highway watch and is run by homeland security. it has several training videos on line in reguards on how to  watch for  strange activity in around the country, activity such as someone asking about what ur driver might be hauling,where they came from or were they r going. someone sneeking around the drivers equipment. taking photos of customer locations etc..etc... terrorisem is no longer just americas problem its everywhere now.

or in hte country of Canada you want to join OOBAC even if you are a company driver to get the info you need in this industry not just what the social media wants you to know

you need training on all road conditions, hills, water, ice,etc. they should also be giving chances to feel different weights of loads to get them to understand how they handle on turns and off ramps.

They need to be taught how to back up properly. need to be taught proper courtesy around the truck stop, ie pull up when your done fueling. dont just park to take a shower or sit down for a meal (thats what a parking spot is for).

need to be taught courtesy of talking on the cb.  how to be professionals ie proper dress for the job, hygiene, cleaning up after themselves.

sadly i say this stuff becuz they should have been taught at home at youngins by their parents but seem to have forgotten those valuable life lessons.

Read the comments from others.  As a retired trainer, Safety is the main course.  The newer generation are really great, but are like sixteen year olds teaching the students to drive a monster truck, instead of a VW.  As a trainer in your outfit have to be strong and alert on all going on while training, you will have the scared and the hotshots for students.  But it is alot of fun and rewarding.  I was the road driver, and got the students fresh out of the classroom with only two weeks to shape the students into Trucking Best, to ace their CDL"S.  Backing is the another big key.  I had mine back into real docks of customers, after their first week of driving, then truck stops.  Tried my best for them to get the real world situations.

Had a 98.5% rating on passing their test.  You will always have a student that needs more time, dealing with the human factor.  Good Luck and Have a great time   TWD

YA SAFETY IS A BIG DEAL ALSO HOW THE 4 WHEELERS ACT WHEN THEY SEE A BIG TRUCK SHOW VIDEOS ON HOW OTHER DRIVERS ACT WHEN IT COMES TO GOIN DOWN A STEEP GRADE THE LOGS BOOK NOW A DAYS THEY DON'T NEED A LOG BOOK THEY HAVE E-LOGS THAT KEEP THERE HOS (HOURS OF SERVICES) ON HOW THEY DO THE PAPER WORK SO THEY GET PAYED 4 THE MILES THEY DONE

You'll need to teach them everything they need to know from how to start up and run a business to regulations (CSA). Also, let them know of things that will help them keep their costs under control if they set out to be Owner Operators. Big issue with these folks as you know out there. This can be overlooked with training schools. Help them in every way you can completely,
